A veterinary technician is an important part of the veterinary medicine, providing assistance to veterinarians in a wide variety of tasks. Examples of the duties of a veterinary technician are administering medications, performing laboratory tests and providing surgical and dental assistance. An individual can start to become a veterinary technician through attendance of an AVMA or CVMA accredited school. Whatever education and training a veterinary technician receives will play a vital role in the performance of his responsibilities. Once he completes his education, a veterinary assistant will need to pass a state-required exam in order to receive certification. Depending on the regulations commissioned by his resident state, a veterinary technician can be called licensed, registered or certified. A veterinary technician can also choose to specialize in certain fields such as neurology, dentistry and cardiology. In addition to animal clinics, a veterinary technician can also find employment in government offices, research facilities and veterinary schools.
